Welcome to the FTTH Council Europe

The FTTH Council Europe is beginning to explore its current geographic boundaries by reaching out to the new democracies that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, the nearby regions of the Middle-East and parts of Africa. While this is by no means a new official remit, it is a long-term aim of the Council to see how we can provide value and insight within these new territories and in return learn from their FTTH projects, with their own difficulties, without diluting our current work.

The programme-committee of the FTTH Council Europe has decided to extend the deadline for the public call for papers to October 13th 2008.

A snap survey by polsters YouGov in Scotland has unearthed strong demand for a range of services that are unique to next generation – principally fibre – broadband networks. In a survey of 1000 households, 87% of respondents wanted TV and movies on demand from their broadband services and 84% wanted high speed downloads.

Residential subscribers within major South African cities such as Cape Town will soon be enjoying FTTH services according to plans aired by operator Neotel.   Neotel already has around 15,000km of fibre laid within nine high-density metropolitan areas enabling mainly business customers to utilise FTTC-based services.

On the 23rd July 2008, at the FTTH Council Asia Pacific annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur the update for the Global FTTH-Ranking of the three FTTH-Councils was presented.
