Plans for Denmark's largest broadband network are based on PacketFront technology

Recently, Denmark's largest power company, NESA, selected PacketFront as its partner in plans for one of the world's largest operator-independent fibre-optic networks. NESA has about 500,000 electricity clients, and in connection with the deregulation of the Danish power market it is building a network capable of delivering services to over 200,000 customers in the municipalities of Greater Copenhagen and Northern Zealand over the next ten years. NESA chose PacketFront's solution to secure automation, control and security in the network.

In principle, NESA is an infrastructure company, and its experience in building, operating and maintaining power grids will come to good use for a fibre-optic network.

"When heavy winds ruined large parts of our power grid, we decided to convert our airborne cables to ground-based," says Lars Lorensen, technical director at NESA in Copenhagen. "At the same time, we saw the potential of the broadband market and possible synergies for our digging project. We now plan to create a profitable infrastructure for broadband services as well as electricity."

To ensure that all involved parties get the most out of the network - in the true spirit of true broadband - NESA has decided not to provide services or content itself. Instead, competing providers will offer their services in the network, providing a greater range and more freedom of choice for the users. But efficiency and functionality require advanced technological solutions, experience and knowledge of how to create profitable, operator-independent networks.

"We chose to work with PacketFront because their solution lets us create a flexible, operator-independent network that can be fully monitored, which is a clear advantage for the customers," Lorensen explains. "PacketFront is a progressive company with broad experience of the market for true broadband, and I'm sure NESA will see this project to fruition."

PacketFront's technology allows a business model that meets NESA's needs. No competitor on the market today can provide such a solution. Besides the technological platform, PacketFront has the expertise to know what challenges face a broadband operator, making PacketFront a trusted advisor to the customer.

Some considerations that PacketFront helps with in various projects include sales and marketing strategies, legal aspects and negotiations with property owners, plans for rollout and strategies for a passive infrastructure. They can also help with business models, integration, negotiating with service providers and content owners, advice and expertise in system integration and in choosing technological platforms.

"Our customers choose PacketFront because of our solution, our experience and our complete range of partners," says Martin Thunman. "We are often consulted in matters of strategic importance during the course of the project. We hope that we will earn such confidence in our collaboration with NESA as well."
